Your Inner Fish: A Journey Into The 3.5-Billion-Year History Of The Human Body

A truly fantastic book. Anyone who knows me is aware of my love for the many popular science books written by Richard Dawkins, particularly the Blind Watchmaker. However, `Your Inner Fish’ may have become the one I would recommend to anyone. It is not a very long book and I think it would make for a good read for everyone, including people who do not have a biological of scientific background. My background in biological sciences makes reading Richard Dawkins’ books quite pleasant, and whilst I think the writing style and language are suitable for everyone, I could understand people finding them a tad “heavy” in places. ‘Your Inner Fish’ is a much lighter read, but no less interesting. It is filled with fascinating information and facts about our evolution and how we sit in the tree of life. Neil Shubin does a brilliant job of showing the similarities between us and the rest of the animal kingdom and takes a poke at the concept of intelligent design along the way. Whilst the book doesn’t come across as being written for the purpose countering intelligent design, it does a good job of presenting evidence in a compelling and entertaining way. Using the human body as an example of how it could have only come about through the process of evolution is a great way for people to see themselves as part of nature and how we are connected to our fishy ancestors.
Definitely a must read. If you want a better understanding of how we are linked to every living thing on this planet and the science that has uncovered this information, then go and read this book.
